Dmitri Chostakovitch:

laulettu venäjäksi, tekstitys englanniksi

- Russian bass Dmitry Ulyanov
- British tenor John Daszak
- Lithuanian soprano Aušrinė Stundytė
- Tchech tenor Pavel Černoch

Starring Aušrinė Stundytė, Pavel Černoch.
Directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski.
Classification: CTC, 210 mins.

New Production! Of Shostakovich’s initial undertaking – a trilogy on the tragic destinies
of Russian women through the ages – only one opera was ever written: Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Although one of the mainsprings of the work,
the Shakespearean parallel is here bitterly ironic: unlike Lady Macbeth, Katerina Ismaïlova (Aušrinė Stundytė), who falls in love with one of her husband’s employees Sergey (Pavel Černoch) in the remote reaches of rural 19th century Russia and is finally forced to commit suicide, is less a manipulator than a victim of a violent and patriarchal society.
Visionary director Krzysztof Warlikowski, whose Don Carlos was presented the last Palace Opera & Ballet season, liberates all the subversive power of this scorching, scandalous work.
